I want to buy a machete made of 1055 carbon steel, and want to know if this steel is durable for repeated use, or even combat use. From this website a quote: http://www.knifecenter.com/knifeblademat... Scroll down to page bottom, it is the second to last entry " 1055 Carbon Steel (Cold Steel products) 1055 steel is right on the border between a medium and a high carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.50%-0.60% and with manganese between 0.60%-0.90% as the only other component. The carbon content and lean alloy make this a shallow hardening steel with a quenched hardness between Rc 60-64 depending on exact carbon content. These combination of factors make this one of the toughest steels available because, when quenched, it produces a near saturated lathe martensite with no excess carbides, avoiding the brittleness of higher carbon materials. This steel is particularly suited to applications where strength and impact resistance is valued above all other considerations and will produce blades of almost legendary toughness." I want to buy a machete made of 1055 carbon steel, and want to know if this steel is durable for repeated use, or even combat use.01055 Steel0It depends on what you mean by dependable. If you are interested in hardness (how well it holds a sharp edge) and toughness (it does not shatter under impact loads), 1055 is a good choice. If you want to carry it around and not worry about it rusting (which will certainly dull the edge and will change the composition over time possibly requiring rehardening and regrinding), then 440 stainless steel is a better choice. It is the alloy of choice for a lot of knife mnfrs.3For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axGzo 1055 is usually what machetes are made from. That or a close match such as 1060-1065. It needs to be carbon steel to retain an edge but not so hard it breaks under high stress.0The way I compare the two machetes is what a machete is usually used for....to cut underbrush. By cutting underbrush means you want length of blade and weight toward the end of the blade for a deeper cut. Also the 1055 will not be too hard to sharpen with a file or a stone. The 1095 machete will ,without a doubt, get much harder, but did they get it that hard? The blade is shorter and will still cut under brush as well and go longer without getting dull. It can be used for field dressing because the shorter length and edge holding ability.Either would be good.0
